What makes Prince Edward County (PEC) a great place to retire?
Namely The lake effect which has two major influences in the PEC area. Milder climates which are just great from a comfort experience in the winter, but also it makes for a fantastic environment in which to grow grapes. Where there are grapes there is wine! This area is the newest designated viticulture area in Ontario. There are approximately 50 vineyards and some 30 or so wineries in the area. The new viticultural influences have attracted so many new businesses to this region. Both culinary experts and artisans alike have flocked here and the resulting benefit… amazing food and drink as well as a plentitude of artisan products – one of my personal favourites is Fifth Town Cheese Factory.
There are festivals many times a year to enjoy and which bring many tourists to this rich area. There are festivals like the Great Canadian Cheese Festival, the Wine Festivals, and oh don’t forget the Music Festivals like 50s and 60s rock, Jazz, and even Chamber Music. There is literally something for everyone.
With the influx of great chef talent, the area has become a Gastronomic capital of the region. Its also being referred to as the Golden Triangle between Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.
In the summer many more additional tourists arrive to enjoy the provincial parks, Sandbanks being one of my favourites. It is gorgeous, and if you have not been, the pristine white sand clean waters and actual sand banks will interest you. There is lots of family camping and water sports for all to enjoy. It becomes a bustling energy-filled place with so much to see, do and experience. Residents also enjoy the local yacht club, sailing clubs and lots of kayaking and canoeing.
There is a large retirement community in Prince Edward County and there are many options to consider from resale bungalows both rural and in the town proper, as well as some very beautiful old homes that some have turned into B&Bs. Have you ever dreamed of owning your own? New builders have been active building brand new bungalows and timed right you can buy from plans, so you can select and design your own home interiors. There is something for everyone and purchasing for half or less than the value of your Toronto home sale is definitely possible.
Did I mention the distilleries and hard cider companies to enjoy, live theatre in the Regent Theatre year-round, Studio and Gallery tours from the local artisans? And finally, if you like Hockey there are a couple of teams waiting for you to cheer them on. The Wellington Dukes and the Picton Pirates. You will not be bored. Oh, and don’t forget no Toronto traffic!!!
